"Vague, but exciting." Det var kommentaren som Tim Berners-Lee fick av sin chef efter att denne hade läst förslaget som kom att bli Internet. Tim som jobbade på CERN presenterade förslaget i mars 1989, mao för 20 år sedan. Det är alltså inte äldre än så! Hur skulle arbetslivet eller för den delen också delar av fritiden se ut ifall World Wide Web, som Tim valde att kalla tekniken, inte fanns? Ja, den frågan får säkert skiftande svar. Oavsett vad vi tycker är nog de allra flesta överens om att tekniken har hjälpt till att öka kunskap, förståelse och kommunikation mellan människor världen över. På många sätt har den mao hjälpt till att demokratisera världen. Sen är det som allt annat, det ankommer på var och en att använda möjligheterna med tekniken på ett vettigt sätt.

I imagine that two people for 6 to 12 months would be sufficient for this phase of the project".

Internet kom till för att Tim ville utveckla ett sätt som gjorde att fysikerna på CERN skulle kunna dela med sig av den information man hade lagrat på sina egna datorn. I maj 1990 kom så världens första webbsajt, "Info.cern.ch". 1991 ploppade de första icke CERN-servrarna upp. I februari 1993 hade "National Center for Supercomputing Applications" utvecklat det första sökverktyget, Mosaic, som gjorde Internet allmänt tillgängligt.

Idag lär det finnas mer än 80 miljoner webbsajter och tillväxten ser inte ut att avta. Kan du föreställa dig att bara ha en "standalone-PC"? Du kanske till och med skulle vara tvungen att svara i telefonen lite oftare....
